Critical reviews of WEN DF1100T:

  • Works
  • Dual fuel, won’t fire a lick on gasoline! Who to call?
  • We bought this generator towards the end of last year for hurricane season. We thankfully did not need it at all so we left it in the box in our CC storage room. We decided recently go ahead and get it unboxed and run it to test for this upcoming hurricane season. We couldn’t get it started. After doing a few things like filling and changing the oil a couple times, cleaning the carb and adding a new spark plug it finally started up. Ran pretty rough at first but smoothed out. The reason for the 1 star is the customer service before we got it running. They sent me a SNARKY email about leaving it in the box for 7 months and offered no troubleshooting than replacing the battery which was fine. Well WEN, DO YOU MAKE THESE TO ORDER? No you do not LOL. They sit in a box on the shelf at the stores or warehouses. There is no reason to expect a factory sealed generator wouldn’t run out of the box regardless of manufacturing date (within reason). Then they told me I would have to reach out to a service professional at my cost and they wouldn’t help me at all under their 1 yr warrantee. Now it’s a moot point because WE got it running but I will not be buying anything from them going forward because they clearly do not back their equipment. If you have an actual problem GOOD LUCK dealing with them and I highly suggest buying another brand. I did buy the 4 year replacement plan with Amazon which I HOPE will be better when the manufactures “warrantee” with useless WEN is over.
  • So I took off two stars for the following: Voltage regulator went bust about 5 months into ownership. Finally found a vendor that had one in stock. Make sure you buy a spare, these are apparently notorious to go bad without warning. Battery, went bad (my fault, left the ignition on by mistake). But, try to find a replacement battery! Even Wen themselves no longer stock it. Odd size, so standard 12v 7ah batteries won’t work. I eventually cobbled together some leads, for a different 7ah battery, but it won’t fit in the original holder. so it’s a bit more exposed to the elements now.
  • I opened generator 6 weeks after receipt . Amazon return policy is within 30 days after receipt. Easy to set up. Engine operated fine. Gfci outlets however would consistently break after 5 minutes when attempting to operate a vintage lamp the refrigerator / freezer and/ or additional freezer. The generator operated a 1500w room heater and bedroom lamp fine. I attempted to contact wen customer service. Very difficult to speak with agent. Agents not available on weekends and returned call a week or so after my leaving numerous messages. An agent finally contacted me informing me that some items like refrigerators and freezers must operate off the 30 amp and 50 amp outlets via converter cables. The agent was nice, knowledgeable and apologetic. It still came down to inadequate personnel due to Covid. I spent near $100 on the cables. When cables received I attempted to operate the generator. It would not start with electric start. I could not jump battery. I tried the pull cord. The cord was very frayed but held . The pull cord is in a very awkward position . You have to be on your knees to pull. In any case the generator would not start. I called wen to complain and seek assistance. Had to leave message. Over a week later no return call from wen. I again called Amazon ignoring first comments that it could not help because over 30 days after receipt. I was again informed of the 30 day return policy. This time I aggressively complained that I was too good a customer of Amazon for it to ignore my pleas for assistance since wen was not assisting. After maybe an hour of courteous assistance from numerous Amazon personnel I was offered two choices: return the generator for about a$250 restocking fee or swap my generator for another one. I chose the swap. The new one was timely delivered this morning at which time the first generator was picked up. It was a pain to pack the first generator for shipping. Had to drain gas and oil. Also had to remove wheels and handel. Then had to build a shipping box around the generator. Used a lot of duct and shipping tape. I will update you on if the replacement works and if the 30 amp converter cables will successfully operator the refrigerator and freezers. So for now I would state do not buy this generator mostly of wen’s untimely service. I am hoping the first item is an outlier and the second will work fine. I will update.
  • This generator weighs around 214 Lbs. Amazon lied to UPS and said it was 82 Lbs. I had to drive 90 miles, round trip, to my local UPS center to retrieve my generator that was supposed to be delivered to my front porch. Also it did not include a bolt and square nut for the negative battery terminal. Lucky I had a bolt with a nut small enough to fit in the terminal. The battery came pre-charged and the generator fired right up for its first start, after adding gasoline and the oil obviously. The frequency of the power isn’t exactly 60 Hz, it’s around 58 Hz, but that might improve as it breaks in, or maybe the engine speed needs sped up slightly, but supposedly it’s still within the margin of error. 🤷‍♂️
  • Had to have a repairman to fix unit so it would start. Carburetor internal float problem. Generator has run fine and has started perfectly several times since then. Voltages are very stable and is pretty quiet for this large a generator. I did not want to return this large unit; it would have to have all fuel and oil, and Wheels and handles removed before return shipment would be possible. AND I had to cut up the box to remove the generator. (Finding a good return box would have been very difficult.) It has 2 handles to move the unit. A single “U” shaped handle would be MUCH better. This generator has a high online rating is a reason also as to why I did not want to return it. “Not starting at first worries me because a carburetor problem MIGHT(?) return. The repairman said carburetor looked good and should not cause a future problem. It takes a very LONG time before one can classify any Item of any type as really “reliable”. (Just think about one’s automobile!) At this time I am somewhat satisfied with this generator.
  • I purchase this generator back in February, work fine the first 3 weeks after that was trouble after trouble, the bad part of the warranty is that you have to take it to a local shop and pay out of pocket they say they will refund you but that never happen , well they decided to exchange my generator after couple of weeks, got the new one and after month n half again trouble appear had to get a new carburetor, problem after problem , do yourself a favor save the trouble and buy locally 🤷🏻‍♂️
  • This generator is very nice but I can’t give a accurate review because I haven’t used it yet. I have wired my electrical panel to run on a 50amp breaker and will put this thing to the test. I live in the Northeast so there’s always a good chance in winter that I’ll use it. Updates to be provided later.
  • The generator is poorly made. came with a dead battery, initially, they said it was the starter unit and sent another to be installed locally. Worked a couple of times. and now I try to key start about every ten days to exercise and charge the battery, sometimes it starts with the electric start, but most times not, need to hook up a trickle charger. The last time tried starting, no luck so I tried pulling the rope, the handle broke and needed seven stitches in the slash on my index finger. Extremely disappointed in this product, beware of the hype.

Critical user reviews of DuroMax XP12000EH:

  • Review 1: The generator arrived damaged in shipping with various parts warped, scratched, and dented. The wheels are low-quality and go flat easily. However, the generator does start up and generate electricity. The customer plans to discuss the issues with Amazon and hopes for replacement parts and better tires.
  • Review 2: The generator has a high idle noise level, and the 50A plug cannot be attached with the rear wheel on. There were no setup or first run instructions included. The wheels are also prone to going flat. However, the handles and lift bar make it easy to move, and the bolts are tightly secured. The customer likes the generator overall but suggests improvements for noise and usability.
  • Review 3: The generator stopped generating power after approximately 20 hours of use. The customer had difficulty with the warranty repair process, experiencing delays and poor service from a local repair shop. However, DuroMax eventually agreed to ship a new generator at no cost. The customer hopes the replacement will be more durable.
  • Review 4: The generator was shipped with a delay but arrived on time. It is noisy but suitable for the customer’s needs. They plan to purchase a sound barrier for it.
  • Review 5: The customer had difficulty starting the generator due to a battery cable being tucked under the gas tank. They criticize DuroMax for not including this information in the instructions. The customer also found other instructions to be confusing. Once the generator was set up, it worked well. They are unsure if they will keep it.
  • Review 6: The generator worked well until it experienced a starter issue. The customer had difficulty getting the warranty honored and ended up purchasing a starter from Amazon. They criticize DuroMax for delays and lack of urgency in resolving the issue. The customer also had a positive experience with another generator brand during this time.
  • Review 7: The customer found discrepancies between the setup instructions provided and the actual product. They had to search for various parts and found the instructions lacking. The generator did not come with necessary tools and oil. The customer suggests updating the instructions and including all required components.
  • Review 8: The generator arrived damaged, with broken plastic pieces and bent parts. It did not run on propane but worked on gas. The customer contacted Amazon for a replacement and had a positive experience. However, they received poor service during delivery and did not receive a response from DuroMax regarding the issue.
  • Review 9: The generator has a weak 50 amp breaker and the wheels wobble after a short time.

  • Review 10: The customer had to spend additional money on adaptors for their propane tank and grounding wire. They feel there was not enough information provided about these requirements.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the WEN DF1100T and DuroMax XP12000EH are reliable and versatile dual fuel portable generators. The WEN DF1100T offers a slightly lower wattage and voltage output compared to the DuroMax XP12000EH, but it compensates with a lower price point. On the other hand, the DuroMax XP12000EH provides more power and features, making it a suitable choice for heavier loads and more demanding applications. When choosing between the two, consider your specific power needs, budget, and preferences to make the right decision.
